Sic A Parcel O Rogues

Sic a Parcel o Rogues

Robert Burns’ contempt for the 1707 betrayal of Scotland’s sovereignty by a small number of influential politicians is not even thinly veiled in this song whose message is still relevant today. Iona Fyfe does justice to this song about a famous injustice.

Sic a Parcel o Rogues
by Robert Burns

Fareweel tae aw oor Scottish fame,
Fareweel oor ancient glory,
Fareweel ev’n tae the Scottish name,
Sae famed in martial story.
Noo Sark rins ower the Solway sands,
And Tweed rins tae the ocean,
Tae mark whaur England’s province stands –
Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation.

What force or guile could not subdue,
Thro mony warlike ages,
Is wrocht noo by a coward few
For hireling traitor’s wages.
The English steel we could disdain;
Secure in valour’s station;
But English gold has been oor bane –
Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation.

O wad or I had seen the day
That treason thus could sell us,
My auld gray heid had lien in clay,
Wi Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and pooer, till my last oor,
I’ll mak this declaration;
We’re bocht and sold for English gold –
Sic a parcel o rogues in a nation.
