Daengirous Wark

Deengirous Wark

In her poem Deengirous Wark, Hannah Nicholson contrasts the hard lives of fishermen working on dangerous seas and the anxious wait of loved ones ashore with the comfort of folk queuing for their fish suppers at the chip shop.

Deengirous Wark
by Hannah Nicholson

Whan he gengs oot tae sea
Tae fish fir a catch wi his crew,
I worry at he mightna come hame.
He’ll be oot on yun boat,
Tossed ower da waves
Laek een o wir bairns’ bath toys,
Cowld an drookit be da watters,
Traetened bi dir dyoobs.
Whan dey geng awa fir a run
I fin mesel panickin deep doon,
Winderin if hit’ll be dis time
At I get da call tellin me
Dir geen aff da radar.
At nicht, I still pit on da shippin forecast,
Reassured whan da announcer
Says “Fair Isle, good, occasionally poor.”
Whan he finally comes hame tae me,
Safe an soond, I gie him a bosie,
Grateful at he cam hame dis time,
But I keen at dem at he gengs oot fir
Willna consider his sacrifices
While dir tuckin intae dir fish suppers.
