The Bonnie Broukit Bairn & Crammasy

In this resource for Higher, Hugh MacDiarmid’s 1925 poem ‘The Bonnie Broukit Bairn’ about Earth’s place in the solar system is mirrored by ‘Crammasy’, a monologue in Scots set on Mars. The Bonnie Broukit Bairn digital animation offers an interpretation of the poet’s words and the Crammasy film an extension and creative exploration of MacDiarmid’s seminal Scots poem.

The Bonnie Broukit Bairn
by Hugh MacDiarmid

Mars is braw in crammasy,
Venus in a green silk goun,
The auld mune shak’s her gowden feathers,
Their starry talk’s a wheen o’ blethers,
Nane for thee a thochtie sparin’
Earth, thou bonnie broukit bairn!
– But greet, an’ in your tears ye’ll droun
The haill clanjamfrie!
