Hallowe’en
Violet Jacob’s poem Hallowe’en is her expression of love for her own son, killed in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. Jacob reflects her loss through the eyes of a young horseman working in Scotland and his friend who lies dead in France. The poem is also a song, performed here by Hannah Rarity as a resource for experiencing and learning about the poetic skill of the often neglected Scots writer Violet Jacob.
